Pregnant Patients

“Mike is fantastic. I had neck pain which came on during pregnancy. I saw a different chiropractor who really scared me with talk about having an unstable pelvis and said it would just get worse. Fortunately I came to see Mike who put me at ease and gave me some really good advice and his treatment really helped to ease things.” - Mrs R

Many women experience pain during pregnancy. In many cases this can be safely and effectively treated by our chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists at Pyramid Health.

What causes back pain in pregnancy?

Many pregnant women experience new aches and pains in pregnancy. One of the most common conditions which causes pain in pregnancy is Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP), which includes Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD). There are many reasons that new pains may affect expectant mothers, including:

  • Hormone changes which relax ligaments

  • Differences in weight and weight distribution as body shape changes

  • Inability to exercise due to fatigue or pain

Should you have any concerns about a new pain experienced during pregnancy, do not hesitate to contact your midwife in the first instance.

Can I have treatment for back pain if I’m pregnant?

Manual therapy during pregnancy is safe and can offer effective relief for back pain, hip pain, pelvic girdle pain and any other aches or pains that could be treated in non-pregnant patients.

The only limitations in pregnant patients are the positions that can be adopted in delivering treatment. Our chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists take the utmost care with all pregnant patients to ensure that bump is not in the way and that mum is not in any discomfort while treatment is being performed.

Will my pregnancy pain get better?

The prognosis for pain in pregnancy can be hard to predict. While some pregnancy-related pain can be resolved relatively quickly, the ongoing changes in your body mean that weight-bearing joints and muscles are always having to adjust. We will provide you with the best self-care advice but pain in weight-bearing joints like the low back and hips can worsen as the pregnancy progresses and may need ongoing treatment or management, though this is certainly not always the case.
