Neck Pain

“Mike was recommended to me and he didn’t disappoint. My first session .. he was so thorough in getting to know more about the issues I have with my neck and back. I am so grateful and feel so much better [and] I’m so happy that I’m finally heading in the right direction. Thank you, Mike.”- Mrs. M

Neck pain is the second most common complaint in chiropractic clinics after Low Back Pain. Most neck pain is benign and can be treated by chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists. Sometimes neck injuries can cause symptoms into the arms; these need careful assessment but can usually be successfully resolved with treatment.

What are the Causes of Neck Pain?

Most neck pain is caused by overloading of the muscles or joints in the neck in some way. It could be too much of a certain type of exercise in a short period of time, long hours in the same posture without a break, or even tension held in the neck and shoulders due to stress. These types of neck pain respond very well to treatment by chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists.

Discs in the neck can also cause pain and discomfort. These injuries can require careful management and have a longer expected timeframe for recovery but most have no ongoing problems once they resolve.

Some neck pain has traumatic causes such as whiplash or can start following a head injury or concussion; these types of pain should be assessed by a GP or hospital before coming to the clinic. Once severe injuries are ruled out, we are usually able to give patients a great deal of relief.

What are the symptoms of Neck Pain?

Neck injuries or syndromes usually present as simple ache, pain or stiffness in the neck, however sometimes the nerves can be irritated - often by discs - causing symptoms into the arms. Most commonly this will be pins and needles but can feature pain, numbness, hot or cold sensations or even muscle or grip weakness into the shoulder, arm or hand.

Neck problems can also cause referred pain to the skull causing headaches and dizziness.

Can Chiropractors treat Neck Pain?

When you come to the clinic with neck pain, our chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists will carry out a thorough history and examination to determine the cause of the pain. This may include assessing the nerves in your neck and orthopaedic tests on the bones, muscles and joints.
