The Pyramid Health team stood outside the clinic

Mike Richards

Chiropractor

Mike earned his Master of Chiropractic degree at the prestigious AECC at Bournemouth University in 2011. Since then Mike has worked in Exmouth and Exeter providing care to the general population as well as supporting local rugby teams and working as a soigneur for cycling company Rapha on their overseas trips.

Mike’s interest in Chiropractic stems from having various injuries treated over the years by chiropractors, helping to sustain a very long career playing rugby. He is similarly passionate about helping his own patients stay active especially through middle and older age.

“People often worry about the damage that exercise might do to your joints”, says Mike, “but the real problem is what not exercising does to them!”

His words are borne out by the countless patients who have found a new lease of life and confidence in their bodies, which you can find “whether you’re 18 or 88 years old”.

When he’s not with his young family, Mike’s spare time is spent mostly in rugby boots, whether that be playing or coaching, or supping flat whites in one of Exmouth’s many cafes!

Mike is GCC registered and a member of the British Chiropractic Association.

Hannah Bolwell

Sports Therapist

Hannah completed her degree in Sports Therapy from the University of Worcester. During her time at the university, she worked with local sports teams as well as working in a clinical setting assessing injuries from other students or members of the public. Since graduating, she has worked with the women’s team at Withycombe Rugby Club, providing pre-training massage and helping injured players return to play using injury assessments and tailored rehabilitation programmes.

Hannah’s sporting background was the reason for her pursuing her career: “I understand what drives athletes and how challenging injuries can be to players - getting back on the field is everything, and helping guide driven clients in the right direction brings me great joy”. Not that you need to be sporting to benefit from sports therapy: “I see all sorts of clients, and I love seeing them progress back to full health and fitness, no matter the starting point”.

In her spare time, Hannah enjoys walking and playing hockey.

Will Pretty-Hockin - Soft Tissue Therapist

Will Pretty-Hockin

Soft Tissue Therapist

Will is a graduate from the Level 5 Soft Tissue Therapy course at Exmouth’s very well respected School of Massage. Having had every variety of manual therapy thanks to the injuries, knocks and niggles from his rugby and sporting career, he understands how frustrating and difficult it can be to live with injuries and pain.

He’s also a qualified Personal Trainer which gives him a great understanding of how exercise can help people to get better and stay better. “Massage can work wonders but movement can be transformational” says Will, “and I love nothing more than helping my clients see and experience that transformation themselves.”

He’s speaking from experience. Diagnosed with hip dysplasia as a teen, he was told never to squat or deadlift again at the age of 24 when he sought help for his back pain. “That had me really worried about what the future might hold; I wish I knew then what I know now.” With no serious episodes of back pain for several years, he’s lifting more than ever. “I don’t think that’s a coincidence. I was told that a double hip replacement was all but an inevitability by the age of 30. Now I feel better than ever.”

He hopes to share his philosophy with all his clients and empower them to do the things that they most want to do.

“It’s a cliché these days, but movement really is medicine” says Will. “Your body can come back from almost anything. I don’t want anyone to feel as low as I did when I thought there was no hope.”

Claire Bassett

Chartered Physiotherapist

Massage Therapist

Claire joined Pyramid Health having previously worked as a schoolteacher and soft tissue therapist, before qualifying as a physiotherapist in 2021.

Claire’s sporting career has provided her with plenty of interactions with health professionals over the years; in the past she has performed in athletics, hockey and rugby, but these days sticks to equestrianism and yoga and Pilates to stay strong. Her time on the other side of the treatment bench started with a Level 5 BTEC in Sports & Remedial Massage from The School in 2015. From there she worked with Anna Maria Mazzieri at the Clinic in Exmouth, where she was soon called upon to put her classroom experience to good use and deliver some areas of the teaching course.

During her time at The Clinic, Claire oversaw the injury management programme provided by The School for both the senior and junior playing squads at Withycombe Rugby Club. As well as playing for Withycombe, Claire gained her RFU Level 2 Coaching Badge and provided pitchside injury cover in addition to coaching the junior girls’ team.

After four years of doing healthcare in her spare time, Claire decided it was time for a career change proper and started a physiotherapy degree. She ended up qualifying with a first in her BSc from Plymouth before starting work in the NHS, where she has worked with acute injuries and injury management, as well as long term conditions such as Parkinson’s and COPD.

“My time in the NHS has taught me that one size doesn’t fit all” says Claire. “When I’m performing an examination I make sure to assess the person and not just the condition they’ve come in for.” Using all the skills gained over her career, from the classroom to the massage table to the hospital bed, Claire helps people return to their best using a combination of manual therapy and exercise prescription.

Claire is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and HCPC registered.
