Interview With… A Personal Trainer

We’re back with another interview with one of our local health and wellness superstars. This time we’re sitting down with someone who you might recognise as the model patient from across our website! Roxy is personal trainer with a particular interest in women’s health and runs gymnastics classes for kids…when she’s not raising her own wonderful children.

(5 minute read)

Morning Roxy! Thanks for sitting down with us. Let’s start with your full name?

Roxanne Brown

And your occupation?

I am a children’s Gymnastics Activity Instructor. I am also a Personal Trainer. I am a Female Fitness Specialist, training all women from youth to senior citizens. Including training ladies that are pre and post natal as well as pre and post menopause.

Tell us about your career so far.

Whilst I was pregnant with my first child I trained to be a gym instructor. By the time my 2nd child came along I was qualified as a personal trainer.

I wanted to help women in particular so by the time my 3rd child was born, I finally became qualified as a Woman’s Fitness Specialist, a Youth Fitness Specialist and a Senior Citizen Fitness Specialist.

I think movement is so important and with people becoming more sedentary and obesity on the rise, I wanted to help children find the joy in movement. This is why I became qualified as a Gymnastics Activity Instructor, to get children enjoying movement from a young age. Making it a way of life as they move into adolescence and adulthood.

Which parts of your work do you like best and why?

I love seeing people become fitter and stronger, moving better and seeing their aches and pains decrease because of exercise.

I love seeing children trying gymnastics, achieving things they never thought they could do. Pushing themselves to do better and starting to love moving, just for fun.

What do we get wrong in healthcare?

I think healthy lifestyle needs to be pushed more and medicine less. Eating more natural, none processed food and movement can really help your body and mind.

I also think that healthcare professionals should lead by example to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Do you have a philosophy on health?

Move for enjoyment and for a fitter and healthier life, especially as you get older.

Be consistent when it comes to fitness and diet but also make sure you enjoy life and have fun times with loved ones, life is too short to restrict everything! Find a balance.

Also stop comparing yourself to others, be the best version of yourself, not anyone else.

What was the hardest lesson you learned?

Marketing can be the hardest part of what I do. Just because I advertise on social media, doesn’t mean everyone knows what I do.

Besides work, what are the passions in your life?

I am passionate about spending time with my little family unit. I also love being around happy, positive people who like to have fun.

Some of my other passions include, walking, cycling, rock climbing, pilates, working out.

I also enjoy a nice sunny beer garden, playing card games and watching films.

I am passionate about anything that fills my life with fun and laughter.

If you didn’t have to work, what would you do?

I would travel. We would take our children around the world and show them all the great things it has to offer. Exploring different countries and cultures.

What is your favourite book?

To be honest I am not a massive reader but if I do read, it is normally books about the human body, as that fascinates me the most.

Do you have children?

Yes, I have 3 children. 2 girls and a boy.

What do you do to relax?

I am not very good at relaxing, I like to be on the go, however…

I find moving, mentally relaxing. Going for a long walk in the countryside is a great way to relax my mind.

To physically relax, I like to watch something good on the TV or have a hot bath.

If pushed to give people the 3 easiest things they could do to improve their health, what would they be?

  1. Move more, try lots of different things till you find something you like and stick to it. Also don’t be afraid to do things on your own. Sometimes depending on other people can cause you to fail or give up.

  2. Eat fresh food the majority of the time, there is a time and place for processed food and take away but make them less and less. Have a variety diet. Having a high protein, high fibre diet with healthy fats will keep you fuller for long and help your body run at optimum level.

  3. Be consistent. Even if you are not seeing massive results. Whatever you do, has to be sustainable and a lifestyle change. Stop looking for quick fixes and see the bigger picture.

Is there anything else you’d like to state for the record?

Life is short, try not to beat yourself up for small failures and focus on the wins. You are not going to change overnight, it is a working process. Just have fun trying new things and enjoying movement. Inspire others to do the same.
